Dick Knowles retired from Broxted Parish Council in May, 2003 after a spell of service that lasted 45 years, 16 of them as Chairman. He joined the Council in 1958 and played an active role in its affairs throughout a period of great change in the village.
For many years Dick has been the local History Recorder, always willing to share his knowledge of the history of the village with newcomers to the parish.
For as long as anyone can remember Dick has cut the grass in Broxted churchyard and helped to keep that large area tidy, enhancing the setting of this historic building.
A retired farmer, Dick has always had a positive approach to walkers and ramblers, maintaining the footpaths on his land and encouraging their use.
There has not been a village event, Jubilee celebrations, Millennium party, annual sports day etc. that Dick has not been involved with, lending his equipment, time and expertise.
In recent years Dick has always been on hand to give good advice and wise counsel to the younger members of the Parish Council.
Throughout all these years, and all these activities, Dick has never sought the limelight, preferring to be in the background, ensuring the success of any event in a modest, unassuming way.
His has been a truly outstanding contribution to the Parish Council and the village and community of Broxted.
